Travelling to Portugal or from Portugal and wondering which airline best suits you, that is, which one is the most veg-friendly? Don’t worry, we got you covered! Here you’ll find which Portuguese airlines offer the most veg options and accomodate your needs!
TAP is the main Portuguese airline, crossing the skies since 1945 and annually carrying millions of passengers to more than 90 destinations, mainly between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Perhaps this is the reason why it is the airline who has the best adapted to the growing demand of different types of food by its customers. “Special meals”, available in economy class flights longer than 5 hours and business class in flights longer than 90 minutes, must be booked up to 24 hours before departure. There are 13 different menus, including three vegetarian options:
- Vegan (VGML): does not contain meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, honey or any other animal product;
- Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian (VLML): contains no meat or fish. It may contain milk, eggs, cheese or butter;
- Hindu Vegetarian (AVML): does not contain meat, fish and eggs. It may contain milk, cheese, butter. It is also free of onion, garlic, mushrooms or caffeine.
SATA Air Açores & Azores Airlines
SATA, founded in the Azores Islands in 1941, counts more than seventy years of air travel history and is the oldest Portuguese airline. It operates flights between the islands of the Azores, during which meals are not served.
Azores Airlines is a subsidiary company of the SATA Group, licensed to operate flights outside of the Azores. On these international flights, Azores Airlines offers its customers the possibility to book vegetarian or vegan meals. The request must be made at the time of booking, by phone, email or at any SATA | Azores Airlines counter, up to 7 days before the scheduled departure time.
Orbest is a Portuguese airline based in Lisbon, a subsidiary of the Spanish airline Evelop Airlines, which operates flights from Portugal to leisure destinations such as Cuba, Dominican Republic and Mexico. All flights lasting more than an hour offer a full bar service, which includes soft drinks, juices and alcoholic beverages. Additionally, depending on the duration of the flight and the schedule, passengers will be able to enjoy cold or hot snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner. These basic meals that the company offers are not vegetarian or vegan, but customers can opt for the Capri premium menu (vegetarian) available on board for an extra fee. Another option is to contact the airline up to 4 days before the flight’s departure time and order a special vegetarian or vegan meal.
EuroAtlantic Airways, White Airways e Portugália Airlines (Tap Express)
These three Portuguese airlines, all associated with the TAP Portugal group, offer meals during their flights prepared by Cateringpor, a catering company that belongs to the TAP group. Therefore, the offer of special meals, including vegetarian and vegan meals on EuroAtlantic Airways and White Airways flights, is the same as on flights operated by TAP Portugal: vegan (VGML), ovo-lacto vegetarian (VLML) and Hindu Vegetarian (AVML).
